Floor Scrubbers Get Down and Dirty

elan-floor-scrubber

With our weather being its normal mix of showers and rain (sic), wet and dirty floors are a problem for most businesses. Visitors and employees cannot help but walk in water and dirt. This not only looks bad but also creates a slip hazard. Many of us have seen entrances and lobbies with “Caution Wet Floor” warning signs obstructing essential access. Imagine the scale of the problem if you are responsible for a shopping centre with thousands of visitors arriving each hour.

Step Forward The Floor Scrubber

Industrial floor scrubbers are fantastic at solving this problem. When they are used to clean floors they collect 99% of the cleaning fluid or water using a vacuum powered squeegee. Used in lobbies with wet and dirty floors, they can quickly clean and dry the floor leaving it spotless and ready for use. No caution warning signs needed now.

Big or Small

Floor scrubbers come in two flavours; walk behind or ride-on. Depending on the size of the area to be kept clean you will choose whichever suits you best. All our machines bar one are battery powered meaning that trailing power leads will not create another hazard. Even a small walk behind floor scrubber will makes short work of a lobby or entrance made wet by recent rain, so keeping your lobby clear is no longer a problem. Requiring no specific operator training,
being very easy to use and manoeuvre means anyone could use it if they thought the floor was becoming dangerous or unsightly.

The Big Clean-up

road sweepers The floods in the Wales and the South of England are appalling. Our thoughts are with the individuals and businesses that are suffering at the hands of this exceptional weather. While the rain continues to fall and the water levels continue to rise, flood defence is the focus.

Once the waters have subsided the big clear-up will start. People will want to get back to some form of normality as quickly as possible. We hope that’s where we will be able to help. In our range of machines there are a number that are ideally suited to clearing roads and cleaning floors.

Floor Scrubbers

Floor scrubbers are fantastic at clearing liquid spills and leave the floor spotlessly clean, having collected the waste water. Their road going counterparts are equally effective. If you have a factory that has had its floor flooded a scrubber drier will collect water from all the low spots in the floor and remove the detritus left by the flood water. Not a pleasant thought but an effective solution to the problem.

Good luck to all those affected. Let us know if we can help.

Combo – two for one offer

combo_openThere are few offers that are as powerful as the famous two for one offers in the supermarkets. Something you need and you can get two of them for the price of one! Now the saying; “if it seems too good to be true it probably is” comes to mind but sometimes, as in the supermarket’s offers, these things are real bargains with no strings attached.

Too Good to be True?

In our range is a machine that offers certain users a similar two for one opportunity. Combo as its been creatively named combines the capabilities of a sweeper with a scrubber drier.

Activate the Scrubber Drier

So how does that help? You run a splendid retail shopping mall and keep it clean sweeping up fast food wrappings, litter, and dust. Great everything’s clean and shiney and then someone’s pride and joy throws their fizzy drink all over the floor and the crowds walk it around an area the size of a football pitch. Slippery floor then sticky floor – urgh!!! Our trusty sweeper cannot clear it up, the fizzy drink sticks the dirt and grime to the floor and will not let go. If our sweeper is a Combo though we just activate the scrubber drier function and it now sweeps up all the loose dirt prior to scrubbing and drying the floor. Simple, quick and impresses the shoppers – wow maybe that’s a three for one offer!

Choosing the right cleaning machine!

montageWith the vast array of cleaning machines available which one do you choose? This post attempts to give you some insight into the questions you will need to answer. Not rocket science but maybe help you prepare for your discussions with prospective suppliers. Also it might help you avoid overlooking an obvious but important point.

Dry or wet?

Dust and debris that is dry can be collected by a sweeper. Introduce water, grease or oil and the situation changes. So the first consideration is just that, will your cleaning be in a dry environment? Yes; look at sweepers. No; then you will need a scrubber drier or a combination machine.

Cleaning Result Required

If you just want to collect dust and debris and are happy with the appearance of the floor then again a sweeper will do just that. However if you want to remove marks and staining from the floor you will want the scrubbing action of a scrubber drier.

Where do you want to clean?

Working inside vs outside introduces a number of considerations. I addition to the wet vs dry situations we have already considered there is the machine’s motor – if its not electric it will produce fumes. Is this acceptable? If not electric power is a your only way to go. When looking at the sweeper’s power requirement look for synergy with the forklifts you might have on site already. Do you have LPG powered forklifts or red diesel on site for tractors then could your sweeper’s motor take advantage of these resources?

Size of the problem

This is a trade off. Cleaning machines have a theoretical cleaning capacity, this is derived from the machine’s cleaning width and its working speed. So, if you want to clean your warehouse floor you could choose a large machine that cleans it in an hour. A machine with a smaller cleaning capacity might take two hours but cost 30% less. There is your dilemma!

A walk behind sweeper can clean a large car park. But, the time it takes when you consider the speed at which it can operate, the number of trips to empty the hopper and that the operator might be exhausted by the amount of walking would make it unacceptable: Then you have to figure out how much you want to pay to reduce or eliminate these factors.

So there you have it. Not exhaustive and it does not cover everything, but this might be useful as a starting point. At the end of the day talking to your suppliers engineers will be the best way to get just the right machine for your application.

Scrubber Drier Technology

Scrubber Drier - MetroEuromec’s range of industrial scrubber driers is available with a low cost attachment that improves cleaning efficiency. The “roller brush” assembly is an option on most of our pedestrian and ride-on models.

The roller brush is a powerful pre-sweep unit. Mounted at the front of the machine it picks up loose debris from the floor before the scrubbing process. This enables scrubbing and sweeping in one pass, without the need for the area to be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner before scrubbing. Cleaning times are reduced by as much as forty per cent.

We are a specialist supplier of cleaning equipment and offer a full range of sweepers and scrubber driers to suit most industrial cleaning applications. Our scrubber drier range comprises nine models which offer the widest possible selection for any commercial cleaning task.

Our walk behind models feature single, two disc or roller brushes and may also be fitted with special squeegees for the cleaning of different surfaces. Standard features include high capacity polythene solution and recovery tanks, suction motor, brush head, squeegee and anti foam device. The largest pedestrian model will clean an impressive 1800 square metres per hour.

Our range of ride-on scrubber driers copes with the most demanding of industrial and commercial cleaning applications. Available with either scrubbing rollers or discs, they all have impressive cleaning performances. Scrubbing widths vary from 800mm to1300mm with the largest having a theoretical hourly cleaning performance of 3,800 square metres.

Metro is a high performance ride-on scrubber drier that has a 6000 square metre per hour cleaning capacity, by virtue of a 1050mm cleaning width and large 270 litre solution tank. Rear wheel drive offers good traction on all surfaces and the drivers position over the front wheel ensures the machine is safe to use in the most crowded environments.

Good, Clean Fun

To attract as many visitors as possible, it is important that leisure facilities make a good first impression.  A clean, sparkling floor is often the first thing that a person will notice about a shopping centre, cinema or sports club.  In order to achieve such results, rubbish, dust and grime must be removed quickly and efficiently by sweeping or scrubbing the floor surface.

Manual methods such as brooms and mops are not only old-fashioned but also inefficient.  Sweeping with a broom is about ten times slower than the smallest powered mechanical sweeper and can create more dust than it collects.  Likewise a mop and bucket will tend to just spread the dirt around, whilst collecting not very much of it. A mechanical scrubber will do the job a lot faster!

In determining the correct powered sweepers or scrubbers to use, there are three main factors to consider.  The most obvious is the type of debris or dust that needs to be removed.  In most leisure environments, litter and spills will be the most common build-ups.

You will also need to decide whether you will use your sweeper or floor scrubber inside, outside, or a combination of both.  Shopping centres for example will mainly be indoors, whilst leisure centres can consist of sports halls, tennis courts and astro turf, which will require different types of machine.

Size also matters – the scrubber or sweeper must be big enough to clean the designated area in a reasonable time scale, yet manoeuvrable enough to operate within the confines of the building’s layout.  It is important that the size of the area and the amount of time available is taken into consideration, as these factors will dictate the required cleaning performance of the sweeper or floor scrubber, measured in square metres per hour.

There are two main types of cleaning machine: sweepers and scrubber driers.

Choosing between a sweeper and scrubber drier comes down to the type of cleaning required.  Sweepers collect dry dust and debris with the minimum amount of hassle, whilst scrubber driers apply water and detergent to the floor, and use a scrubbing action to remove grease, staining and ground-in dirt.

Sweeping machines work on the principle of rotating a cylindrised brush (the main brush) against the direction of travel of the machine.  This lifts the dust and debris from the floor.  The sweeper’s internal system will then deposit the collected rubbish in a hopper.  It does this using a vacuum system and/or throwing the dirt.  The hopper will be at the front of the machine if it a forward throw machine, and at the rear if it is a over-throw machine.   The over-throw system has the advantage of having the collection hopper at the rear.  This puts the driver at the front of the sweeper for a better view and easier manoeuvrability.

Scrubber driers work by applying water and detergent to the floor.  Then using a system of brushes, the floor is scrubbed to remove grease, staining and grime.  Scrubbers may have one, two or three brushes depending on the cleaning width requirement.  The pressure applied by the brushes will be adjustable to cater for different cleaning tasks.  Finally the dirty water is collected in waste-water reservoir to be emptied when the cleaning is finished.

Euromec, the UK’s leading supplier of floor cleaning machines, recently supplied two scrubber driers to the Mailbox shopping centre in Birmingham.

As a prestigious retail and lifestyle development, The Mailbox requires high standards of cleanliness. One of its main objectives is to ensure that there is no litter on the floor for more than 10 minutes.  Made from Chinese granite, the floor requires the very best in cleaning equipment to maintain its bright colour.  So The Mailbox set out to find a machine that would produce spectacular scrubbing results.

Euromec was selected as one of seven companies to demonstrate the performance of its scrubbers. The Metro and GO scrubber driers were chosen as the machines to use. The Metro is a high performance ride-on scrubber with a pre-sweep option and 6000 square metre per hour cleaning capacity, making it ideal for heavy duty industrial or commercial applications. The GO is a low-cost compact scrubber specifically designed for cleaning smaller commercial and industrial areas. Not only does it clean exceptionally well, it also leaves the floor completely dry.

Alison Harper, Operations Manager at The Mailbox was impressed with the floor scrubbers’ ability to achieve a visibly cleaner floor after just one demonstration. “Both the Metro and GO floor scrubbers have proved to be very efficient and a cost effective way to maintain the granite flooring.”

When choosing a floor scrubber or sweeper for use in leisure applications, take time in considering the size of area to be cleaned, what type of debris needs removing, and how long you have to do this.  The right machine for the right application will make all the difference in its cleaning performance, and the results you desire to make that good first impression.
